Southeast Michigan, in spite of enormous economic challenges, is becoming a more confident and hopeful place. Leadership is coalescing to reinvigorate the region’s economy and improve the quality of life in urban areas. Nowhere is this more evident than in Detroit where the International Riverfront is undergoing a remarkable transformation. Similarly, Downtown and Midtown are emerging as lively communities with new housing, businesses, shops and restaurants. Optimism is building because community leaders, government and business, along with local and national foundations, are demonstrating an eagerness to work together to make a difference.
Detroit’s near-eastside neighborhoods are surrounded by much of the city’s new development and uniquely posed to benefit from it. For this reason, and to capitalize on this new momentum, the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Ford Foundation established the $15 million Detroit Neighborhood Fund two years ago.
The Detroit Neighborhood Fund will forge new connections between eastside neighborhoods and the resurgent East Riverfront District, Downtown and Midtown areas. Our goal is to benefit the residents and employees in both the existing and emerging neighborhoods.
The investments target an 11-square mile area on Detroit’s near-eastside. It is bound by Woodward to the west, McClellan to the east, I-94 to the north and the Detroit River to the south.
The Community Foundation’s Detroit Neighborhood Fund is investing in the future of Detroit’s near-east side. It is supporting efforts led by residents and capable community organizations and institutions that are part of and committed to the community for the long-term. It supports projects that will make an immediate difference but also have a ripple effect that builds momentum and encourages others to invest and get involved in making Detroit’s near-east side neighborhoods a model of urban living.
The Detroit Neighborhood Fund is a fund of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan in cooperation with the Ford Foundation and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
