Job Skills and Life Skills

September 23rd, 2016 Back to Browse Stories

In Macomb County, a long-inactive dairy farm has come to life as a place where adults with special needs and developmental disabilities can learn job skills and life skills through farming. Program and work activities at Special Dreams Farm vary by season and include landscaping, greenhouse horticulture, gardening, caring for livestock, maintaining fruit-bearing trees, woodwork, cooking and handling sales at the farm’s various retail enterprises. The program also improves participants’ self-esteem by reinforcing the value of their work and helping them appreciate their role in the functioning of a viable enterprise.

A grant from the Community Foundation is helping Special Dreams Farm to expand these valuable services for adults with conditions ranging from autism and Down syndrome to closed-head injuries and other cognitive impairments.
