Two performing arts powerhouses have combined forces to raise the profile of dance in southeast Michigan. The Michigan Opera Theatre and the University Musical Society are using a $250,000, three-year grant from the Community Foundation to bring acclaimed classical dance companies to Detroit and the region — an effort exemplified by the recent American Ballet Theatre performance of Sleeping Beauty at the Detroit Opera House. Wrap-around programming — including master classes for trained dancers, experimental community dance events, campus lectures, post-performance discussions and interactive web content — will enrich the experience of both committed dance patrons and those who are new to the art form.
