On Aug. 16, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy in partnership with Project Play Southeast Michigan hosted the Detroit Youth Sports Showcase surrounding Cullen Plaza at the Detroit Riverfront — an event that celebrates community and sports sampling. More than 300 children participated in the event, demonstrating the importance of providing youth in southeast Michigan with access to quality sports programs and spaces that promote play, activity and engagement.

“We’re thrilled to continue partnering with the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy to create a space where children can play in an environment that fosters safety, empowerment and fun,” Project Play Director Pat Sharrow says. “Sports sampling creates an opportunity for youth to discover new sports while learning transferrable skills that will translate on and off the field.”

The event featured many Project Play partners who hosted mini-clinics to teach basic techniques. Children and families were able to learn more about upcoming camps and training while enjoying food, music and festivities. Project Play is an initiative that the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan manages.
