For over six decades, the Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA) has been more than just an organization—it has been the heartbeat of a vibrant community, working tirelessly to uplift, inspire, and preserve the cultural richness of Detroit’s Hispanic community.

With a steadfast belief in the potential of every individual, SDBA has woven a tapestry of opportunity, creativity, and growth that ensures southwest Detroit thrives both today and for generations to come. Their dedication to their mission is fortified by an endowment established in 2006 with the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, a partnership that ensures the long-term sustainability of their impactful work.

Central to this mission is COMPÁS Detroit – Center of Music & Performing Arts Southwest Detroit, a program that ignites the passions of the youth, offering them not just a stage, but a platform to express their dreams and aspirations. “At the Southwest Detroit Business Association, our dedication to preserving the rich cultural heritage of our community is at the heart of everything we do,” shares Laura Chavez-Wazeerud-Din, President and CEO of SDBA.

“Establishing an endowment with the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan was a natural choice because they share our deep commitment to supporting our community and its youth. This partnership allows us to create a lasting legacy, ensuring that future generations will continue to benefit from resources and opportunities that uplift and empower them, while also preserving our cultural heritage.”

Envisioning a Thriving Future

The dreams of the SDBA stretch far beyond the present, reaching into a future where every member of the Hispanic community can achieve their fullest potential. “We envision a community where our youth are empowered through education, the arts, and leadership opportunities, enabling them to become the next generation of leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators,” Chavez-Wazeerud-Din passionately explains. “Our goal is to build an enduring legacy of success, where the contributions of the Hispanic community are recognized and valued, and where every member has the resources and support they need to achieve their fullest potential.”

Every step the SDBA takes today is a step toward this brighter tomorrow. Whether through the artistic nurturing provided by COMPÁS or the economic empowerment of local businesses, the SDBA is actively laying the foundation for a future filled with promise and opportunity. Their La Joya Gardens project is just one example of how they are creating spaces that nurture community, prevent displacement, and ensure that growth benefits all.

“By partnering with organizations like the Community Foundation and creating sustainable endowments, we are laying the groundwork for long-term success,” Chavez-Wazeerud-Din says. “We’re ensuring that our efforts continue to benefit the community for generations to come.”

Showcasing Beauty and Diversity within the Hispanic Community

The SDBA’s vision also includes their Experience Southwest Detroit initiative, a vibrant invitation for everyone to discover the unique beauty of this community. “This initiative is designed to transform our vibrant community into a must-visit tourist destination that ignites all five senses,” says Chavez-Wazeerud-Din.

“Through this program, visitors can fully immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of southwest Detroit by experiencing our unique art, dining, shopping, cultural heritage, and historical sites. It’s all part of our commitment to showcasing the beauty and diversity of our community while fostering economic growth and cultural pride.”

As Hispanic Heritage Month shines a light on the rich contributions of the Hispanic community, the Southwest Detroit Business Association stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment. Through their partnership with the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, they are not just preserving a legacy—they are actively crafting a future where the dreams of today’s youth blossom into the cultural celebrations of tomorrow.

The SDBA’s journey is a powerful reminder that when we invest in our communities, we build a future where everyone has the chance to thrive.

We celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15) to recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success.
