As we approach the upcoming elections, it’s clear that regardless of the outcome, the nonprofit sector will face significant changes.
At the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, we believe that this moment calls for steadfast commitment—not only to the causes we support, but also to the people behind the work that strengthens our communities.
Over the last few election cycles, nonprofits have faced significant challenges. The 2020 election, for example, saw organizations focused on issues like racial justice and voting rights experience a surge in donations, while others that were not directly connected to those issues struggled to maintain donor engagement. Nonprofit donations often fluctuate sharply during election years, as economic uncertainty and potential changes in tax incentives lead some donors to hold back.
This election-related instability compounds an already challenging environment, where the nonprofit sector is grappling with a continuing gradual decline in individual giving. The share of overall giving from individual donors dropped slightly from 67.4% in 2022 to 67.2% in 2023, continuing a long-term downward trend. Additionally, individual donations decreased by 2.4% during this same period, according to a report by Giving USA.
Political outcomes can directly impact how nonprofits are funded, the regulations they must navigate, and the public’s ability to donate. As we’ve seen in recent years, policies regarding tax incentives and charitable giving can shift dramatically depending on who is in power. At the same time, broader economic trends—often driven by election outcomes—can cause donors to tighten their belts.
This is not a time for standing on the sidelines. Nonprofits need our support now more than ever, especially as they brace for what’s next. Many of the organizations we work with have proven their resilience during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, but resilience alone won’t be enough to survive the challenges ahead. They need sustained investment, strong leadership, and community involvement.
Here’s what you can do:
- Support a nonprofit in your community right now. Whether through a donation, volunteering, or simply amplifying their mission, your contribution can make a real impact.
- Engage with the leaders who are making change happen. Community leaders are the heart of our neighborhoods, working tirelessly to solve pressing issues. Reach out, offer your skills, and get involved. These leaders need your support now more than ever.
- Consider joining a local foundation or philanthropic network. Foundations like ours—whether private or public—are committed to ensuring that resources create lasting impact. You can be part of the solution by supporting their efforts.
- Advocate for policies that strengthen the nonprofit sector. Contact your government representatives and push for policies that support nonprofits, especially those that provide critical services. Your voice is essential in shaping the future of our communities.
Political outcomes will certainly influence aspects of our work, but they will not change our commitment. We are in this for the long haul, and we are confident that with your help, we can ensure that nonprofits and their leaders have the resources they need to continue driving positive change.
This is a critical moment. Let’s make sure that, no matter what happens in the halls of government, the organizations and people that keep our communities thriving have the resources, support, and leadership they need to keep moving forward.
