Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan President and CEO Nicole Sherard-Freeman joined WDIV Local 4 for a conversation following the Michigan Chronicle’s “Pancakes & Politics” March forum. This month’s event was themed “Moving Our Region Forward.” Sherard-Freeman expressed optimism about where metro Detroit is heading.

Speaking with host Jason Kohler, Sherard-Freeman reflected on what she heard about the status of regional transit from panelists including SMART CEO Tiffany Gunter, Warren Mayor Lori Stone, and Detroit City Council President James Tate. From a 12% increase in on-time ridership to ground-level perspectives from community leaders, she said the conversation reinforced something she’s been watching build: real momentum around regional transit.

At the Community Foundation, our vision is of a southeast Michigan where everyone thrives, and access to reliable, connected transportation is central to making that possible. A stronger transit system means more equitable access to jobs, health care, education and opportunity for residents across all seven counties we serve.

Sherard-Freeman made clear that this moment calls for the kind of regional collaboration and leadership that have long defined how the Community Foundation approaches complex community challenges.

A critical opportunity is on the horizon: Metro Detroit voters will have the chance this year to weigh in on a regional transit ballot initiative that could significantly expand and improve transit service across the area.

Turning that opportunity into a yes, Sherard-Freeman said, means doing the hard work of connecting transit to the everyday lives of the people who will benefit most.
