Thank you for your interest in serving on the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan’s Youth Advisory Committee (YAC). Our YAC was started in 1991 with the help of a $1 million grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Our goals for the YAC are twofold, to help the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan address the needs of youth through grants to local programs and projects that serve young people, and to support youth as leaders in our region. YAC members also learn about philanthropy, volunteerism and community leadership.

Participation in the YAC involves three essential activities:

  1. Review grant proposals from organizations that benefit young people in southeast Michigan.
  2. Visit with the grant recipients to learn how the funds will be used.
  3. Meet with those impacted by our outreach to help broaden our perspectives on community needs.

Every year the Youth Advisory Committee evaluates grant applications and makes recommendations to fund grants of $5,000 – $20,000 to youth organizations in our local communities.

• We participate in state-wide leadership training opportunities, such as the Council of Michigan Foundations Summer Leadership Conference.
• We engage in learning opportunities to broaden our perspectives on needs of our region’s youth.
• We come together once a month for meetings or events.

We welcome youth from all backgrounds and experiences to apply. The participation of well-rounded and thoughtful committee members enables the Youth Advisory Committee to make a positive impact on southeast Michigan. Committee members learn a great deal about the needs in our regional community and have the opportunity to serve as a catalyst for a better future.

Applications will open again in the Spring of 2019.

Minimum Membership Requirements:

1. Available to attend one event per month. You must be able to secure transportation to and from monthly meetings. Those who miss more than two meetings consecutively without  valid excuse or communication with YAC Co-Chairs may no longer participate in the YAC.

2. Attend the Full-day Orientation.

3. Be between the ages of 13-21 and are committed, dedicated and interested in learning about southeast Michigan.

4. Be a resident of Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw or Wayne County.
