Providing Access to Our Region’s Great Lakes Waterfront: Five-Year Progress Report

Our team at the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan is proud to help build the resources, relationships and  expertise required to ensure all residents have equitable opportunities to thrive. Our mission is to make southeast Michigan a desirable place to live, work and play for all residents, today and tomorrow.

In that spirit, the Community Foundation and our partners have worked to build on our long history of helping create public outdoor spaces and trails by establishing The Great Lakes Way. This initiative is focused on establishing an interconnected set of greenways and water trails that stretch from Port Huron, Michigan on southern Lake Huron to Toledo, Ohio on western Lake Erie.

Working with local communities, nonprofit organizations, businesses and many other partners we’re helping reconnect communities to one another and to the amazing water resources in their own “backyards.” The benefits of The Great Lakes Way are truly significant, including promoting outdoor recreation, catalyzing economic development, connecting people with nature, celebrating historical and cultural assets, promoting conservation, supporting healthful living and improving quality of life.

On the five-year anniversary of this initiative, we’re proud to share the substantial progress made by our team and many, many community partners to make our shared vision for The Great Lakes Way come to fruition. Over time, we’re confident The Great Lakes Way will become an essential part of our region’s fabric.
