SHINOLA PIVOTS MESSAGING FOR OLYMPICS-THEMED WATCH AND LAUNCHES THE CHAMP TO BENEFIT DETROIT’S HEALTHCARE WORKERS OF THE COVID-19 CRISIS

(DETROIT – MAY 29TH, 2020) – “Athletic to the core and not one to shy away from a little competition, The Champ Detrola embodies the pride of giving it your all,” was Shinola’s initial messaging for The Champ: a Detrola timepiece timed to launch around the Olympic opening ceremony. But things have changed. The Olympics are cancelled; therefore The Champ is cancelled. Well, not anymore. Shinola has given The Champ a new purpose.

The real champs are hard at work – fighting the most unprecedented pandemic of our lifetime – all over the country and in our hard-hit hometown of Detroit. In conjunction with the launch of The Champ, Shinola will be donating to the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan (CFSEM) – specifically to their efforts supporting the healthcare workers who are giving it their all on the frontlines of the COVID-19 crisis. The Community Foundation, headed by President Mariam Noland, has a significant track record of leading important initiatives — from playing a major role during the city’s bankruptcy, to now helping Detroit’s health care organizations fighting COVID-19.”

We are grateful to Shinola for the opportunity to help those working in healthcare during this crisis,” says Mariam Noland, president, Community Foundation. “Healthcare workers put themselves in the path of the coronavirus and kept us safe. We applaud their bravery.”

In an effort to immediately support our frontline champions when it’s needed most, The Champ will be available to pre-purchase beginning May 29th on Shinola.com, with a target delivery in late-July. This is pending on the reopening of our watch factory, as we will only begin getting back to work when it is 100% safe to do so. As we slowly and safely start to bring our team back to our facilities, assembling The Champ will be the first – and most important – thing we do.

The multi-colored matte dial features a striped pattern of red, gold, bright blue, bright green and black as well as the Shinola Detroit and Detrola collection logos. The cream colored 43mm case crafted from TR90 resin is anchored by a stainless-steel core & Argonite 705 movement handassembled in Detroit, and the dial is protected by double-domed K1 crystal. Complete with a soft & flexible black silicone strap, this unisex timepiece is a representation & celebration of 2020’s true Champs – ‘Olympians’ in their own right – getting us through a worldwide health crisis.

Priced at $395 and limited to 500 units, The Champ will be available for pre-sale at Shinola.com beginning May 29th. Shinola has pledged to donate $197,500 to the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.
